Prof. Satishchandra Ogale Honoured with the 2026 TWAS Award for Physics
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), for the advancement of science in developing countries, has honoured Prof. Satishchandra Ogale, Director at the Research Institute of Sustainable Energy (RISE), TCG CREST, Kolkata, with the 2026 TWAS Award for Physics. This recognition celebrates his “innovative research in sustainable development, applying advanced functional materials physics to energy harvesting, storage, and conservation.”
The award, which includes a $5,000 prize and a plaque, highlights Prof. Ogale’s impactful research work in clean and renewable energy in India. Notably, only 16 eminent Indian physicists have received this prestigious honour in the 39 years since the award’s inception.
Prof. Ogale’s distinguished 45-year career includes over 530 international publications, 10 U.S. patents granted based on research done in India, and an h-index of 90 with more than 39,000 citations. A respected voice in the field, he has delivered numerous keynotes and invited talks at major conferences. He also serves on the editorial boards of several high-impact journals in energy and sustainability.
His other accolades include the INSA Young Scientist Medal, B.M. Birla Prize, Sir C.V. Raman Prize, and CNR Rao Lecture Prize of MRSI, among others. Prof. Ogale also led a UK-India collaborative project that won the prestigious Newton Prize and has collaborated extensively with industries such as KPIT and LivGuard in Na-ion and Li-ion battery development.
